For most households with gas central heating, a smart thermostat pays back in 2-3 years through energy savings. If you're planning to install a heat pump in the next few years, check compatibility first - Tado and Nest have better heat pump integration than Hive.
If you're considering a smart thermostat primarily for environmental reasons, insulation and supplier switching will have significantly larger impacts for comparable or lower cost.
